So the Portuguese government held onto the vast majority of its Nazi gold, but the famously frugal Salazar preferred to save it rather than invest it in Portugal's economy in the 1950s and 1960s. His dictatorship was overthrown in 1974 and replaced by a new democratic state. But these democratic leaders also proved reluctant to spend their Nazi gold. They did use a small part of the reserves in the 1980s and 1990s to blunt Portugal's economic liberalization program, which was a prerequisite to Portugal's entry into the euro zone. At current market rates, Portugal's estimated gold reserves are worth roughly $18 billion (€12.7 billion), and there's reason to believe that even the 400-ton estimate is too conservative. Gold bars stamped with the Nazi swastika are said to remain in the vaults of the Bank of Portugal, which is located on the aptly named Gold Road in downtown Lisbon.
